New survey data published on TechCrunch shows enterprise AI agent deployment accelerating faster than the security controls meant to govern it. The figures come from Gravitee's State of AI Agent Security 2026 report, based on a survey of 750 executives and technical leaders conducted in April 2026 alongside a December 2025 baseline.

The typical enterprise agent deployment jumped from a range of 26 to 50 active agents to a range of 76 to 100 agents in a single quarter, roughly doubling in four months. Despite that growth, average monitoring coverage rose only slightly, from about 47 percent in December to roughly 52 percent in April, meaning the raw number of unmonitored agents in production increased even as oversight barely improved. Only 9.5 percent of organizations reported securing more than 80 percent of their deployed agents.

More than half of organizations, 54 percent, said they had experienced or suspected an AI agent security or data privacy incident in the prior 12 months, with telecom companies reporting the highest rate at 67.3 percent and financial services close behind at 54.7 percent. The report also found that 85 percent of organizations have no formal accountability structure for AI agent behavior, and only 7.2 percent could name a specific individual responsible when an agent takes a harmful action.

Executive confidence moved in the opposite direction of the coverage data. Stated confidence in agent visibility rose nine percentage points between the two survey waves, from about 83 percent to roughly 92 percent, even as actual monitoring coverage stayed flat.
