A Waymo autonomous vehicle caught fire following a crash in the Morningside-Lenox Park neighborhood of northeast Atlanta on the night of Sunday, July 27, 2026. Local coverage documented the vehicle burning at the scene.
Waymo began commercial operation in Atlanta in June 2025, deploying all electric Jaguar I-Pace vehicles across nearly 65 square miles of the city. The company raised $16 billion in February 2026 at a $126 billion valuation and has stated a target of 1 million rides a week by the end of 2026.
The Atlanta market has produced earlier documented software problems. Waymo issued a recall covering 3,067 vehicles for school bus stop arm violations after vehicles were recorded passing stopped school buses with red lights flashing in both Austin and Atlanta during late 2025 and early 2026.
Federal crash data provides the broader baseline. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration database records roughly 1,500 incidents involving Waymo vehicles operating in autonomous mode between 2021 and 2025, with more than 100 reported injuries and two fatalities. Analysis of the 45 most serious crashes attributed 37 of 41 driving error collisions mostly or entirely to other drivers.
No cause has been publicly established for the Morningside crash and fire.
