The lobbying push centers less on AI regulation directly and more on data center expansion, according to reporting on the disclosures. Several local communities have imposed construction moratoriums amid concerns about rising electricity prices and environmental impact tied to new facilities. State Rep. Aftyn Behn has proposed pausing tax breaks currently available to data center developers in the state.
Tennessee's data processing sales tax exemption is estimated to have generated roughly $110 million in tax savings for qualifying companies in the 2026-27 period, underscoring the financial stakes for both the industry and the state. Public lobbying disclosures do not yet show how much individual companies are spending on the effort.
An analyst tracking political spending noted that AI-related interests are increasingly active at the state level as a counterweight to growing local opposition to data center development, a dynamic that has made Tennessee one of the more closely watched states for this fight.
