Anthropic's Claude crossed a historic threshold in April 2026, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT as the most widely adopted AI model among U.S. businesses. According to the May 2026 Ramp AI Index, which tracks spending patterns across more than 50,000 U.S. businesses, adoption of Anthropic rose 3.8% in April to 34.4%, while OpenAI's business adoption fell 2.9% to 32.3%.
The crossover represents the culmination of a year of rapid gains for Anthropic, which quadrupled its business adoption over the past 12 months while OpenAI's business adoption grew only 0.3%. Overall AI adoption among businesses crossed 50% for the first time in the same month, signaling a structural shift in how U.S. companies budget for and deploy AI tools.
Despite the milestone, the same Ramp report flags risks to Anthropic's position, including high token-based pricing, compute capacity constraints, and escalating competition from OpenAI's newly launched Deployment Company, backed by 19 investment and consultancy partners.
