At the Council for Quality Growth's INTERSECTION Development Conference in Sandy Springs on August 14, industry executives and local officials from across metro Atlanta gathered to discuss how artificial intelligence is changing development, permitting, and government operations. The nonprofit trade organization brought together nearly two dozen public and private sector leaders for the annual event held at the Sandy Springs Performing Arts Center.
Panelists described the building industry as fragmented, with each stage of a project often solving problems in isolation rather than working from shared data. Executives from construction and real estate firms said the surge of data center construction is pushing builders toward AI tools that speed up planning and reduce delays across projects.
One presenter introduced an AI powered permitting platform built in the region that connects directly to local government systems, scanning zoning codes and regulations to give applicants faster feedback before a human reviewer sees a submission. Representatives from major construction and development firms described AI as useful for narrowing research time on site selection, though several cautioned the technology performs best on specific questions rather than complex judgment calls.
A separate panel featuring mayors from Woodstock and Mableton along with an Atlanta City Council member focused on how local governments are applying AI to permitting review and constituent services. More than 100 elected officials from the region's 87 local governments attended the conference, alongside roughly 400 industry professionals, according to conference organizers.
Sandy Springs has already hired a director of data strategy, analytics and AI integration to guide its own technology rollout.
