Ninety five percent of B2B marketers now use artificial intelligence in at least one part of their workflow, according to 2026 industry research. The performance picture behind that number is far less uniform. Fewer than 40 percent of marketers report measurable improvement from the tools they have deployed, with 39 percent saying AI is actually improving performance.

The adoption curve outside the enterprise moved just as fast. AI use among US small businesses climbed from 26 percent in 2023 to 87 percent in 2026, a figure that reflects tool access more than documented outcomes.

Researchers attribute the gap between adoption and results to how teams deploy the technology. Organizations treating AI as an operating strategy, with governance, human review, and defined measurement, report different outcomes than organizations that added tools without changing process. Teams that already scaled content volume are shifting attention toward depth of engagement rather than output count.

Content drafting registers the strongest return among common use cases, at an average 3.2 times ROI. That figure holds only when editorial quality survives the process. Human reviewed AI content performs on par with content written entirely by people, while unreviewed output does not.

Gartner projects that 40 percent of enterprise applications will include task specific AI agents by the end of 2026, a shift that moves AI from a separate tool layer into the software marketing teams already use daily.
