The 2026 AI Index Report from Stanford HAI devotes a full chapter to medicine, and the adoption figures inside it show how far AI systems have moved into everyday United States health workflows.

Search is one of the clearest measures. AI generated summaries now appear at the top of 84 percent to 92 percent of health related Google searches. Symptom queries and common health questions trigger an AI Overview 92 percent of the time, treatment queries 90 percent, condition question queries 88 percent, and broad condition queries 84 percent. For any organization publishing health information, the summary layer now sits between the question and the source.

Regulatory throughput tells a similar story. The Food and Drug Administration authorized 258 AI medical devices in 2025. The vast majority reached the market through device modification pathways that rely on existing safety and efficacy evidence, and only 2.4 percent of devices with clinical studies were supported by randomized trial data.

Inside hospitals, AI tools that draft clinical notes from patient visits saw broad adoption in 2025. Physicians across multiple hospital systems reported spending up to 83 percent less time writing notes, and one system reported a 112 percent return on investment.

Diagnostic benchmarks moved as well. A multi agent system paired with a frontier model scored 85.5 percent on complex published case studies against 20 percent for physicians working without their usual tools.
