Generative AI platforms referred 226.8 million U.S. visitors to third-party sites in January 2026, according to Similarweb's 2026 Generative AI Brand Visibility Index. That total ran 15 percent below the 267.4 million referred in October 2025, and the U.S. referral rate fell from 18.8 percent to 15.8 percent over the same window.

The volume decline contrasts with the quality of that traffic. Users arriving from ChatGPT spent an average of 15 minutes on site, compared with 8 minutes for visitors from Google, and generated 12 pageviews per visit against 9 from Google. They converted on transactional sites at a 7 percent rate, versus 5 percent for Google referrals, suggesting AI-referred users arrive with stronger intent.

Platform usage continued climbing even as outbound referrals stayed roughly flat. AI platform visits grew 28.6 percent between January 2025 and January 2026, while ChatGPT web visits rose 84 percent between September 2024 and March 2026. The report tracks brand mention share by sector, with Apple leading consumer electronics at a 54.38 percent mention rate. The data shows AI search sending less traffic overall while delivering visitors who engage and convert at higher rates.
