Anthropic's share of paid business AI usage has grown more than sevenfold in fourteen months, closing in on longtime leader OpenAI, according to an analysis by Visual Capitalist built on anonymized spend data from more than 50,000 U.S. businesses on the Ramp platform. The data tracks only paid subscriptions and excludes free tier usage, offering a clearer view of which AI tools companies are actually willing to fund.

As of April 2026, Anthropic's business adoption reached about 34.4 percent, edging past OpenAI at roughly 32.3 percent, a reversal from March 2026 when OpenAI still led at 35 percent to Anthropic's 30 percent. Visual Capitalist attributes Anthropic's rise largely to enterprise focused tools including Claude Code and Cowork, which have gained traction among business and technical teams managing coding and workflow automation tasks. OpenAI's paid usage roughly doubled over the same fourteen month period, a slower growth rate than Anthropic's expansion.

Google and xAI trail both leaders by a wide margin. Google sits just under 10 percent of paid business usage, while xAI and other providers remain below 5 percent each. The concentration of spend among two providers suggests that, despite a crowded field of AI model makers, enterprise budgets are consolidating around a small number of tools that have proven reliable for day to day business use.
