About 88 percent of organizations reported using artificial intelligence in at least one business function in 2026, according to enterprise AI research summarized this quarter, a level that reflects how thoroughly the technology has moved into standard operations. Generative AI specifically is now used by roughly 79 percent of organizations in at least one function.

The pace of adoption stands out. Generative AI reached about 65 percent of enterprises in 2025, up from 33 percent in 2023, described as the fastest technology adoption curve on record for the researchers tracking it. Spending rose in step, with enterprise generative AI outlays climbing 222 percent from 2024 to 2025 to reach roughly $37 billion.

Function by function, AI has spread into marketing, customer service, software development, and operations, often through tools embedded in software companies already use. That embedding lowered the barrier to adoption, letting teams apply AI without building systems from scratch.

The breadth of use, however, has outpaced the depth of results in many organizations. While a large majority report using AI somewhere, far fewer report material financial impact at the enterprise level, a gap that has become the central theme of the current phase. The adoption numbers show reach, but the returns remain concentrated among a smaller set of companies that have moved beyond pilots into scaled deployment.

For businesses evaluating where AI fits, the data describe a landscape where use is nearly universal but effective use is still being worked out. The question has shifted from whether to adopt AI to how to turn broad adoption into measurable value.
