Stanford University's Human-Centered AI Institute released its 2026 AI Index Report, tracking how deeply artificial intelligence has moved into business operations worldwide. The economy chapter found that organizational AI adoption reached 88 percent of surveyed organizations in 2025, up from prior years, though the report notes that AI agent use remains an early-stage practice.

Generative AI specifically is now used in at least one business function at 70 percent of organizations, with China and Europe posting the sharpest year-over-year increases. AI agent deployment, by contrast, remains in the single digits across nearly all business functions, showing a gap between broad adoption of AI tools and the narrower rollout of fully autonomous agents.

The report's productivity findings carry direct relevance for marketing teams: studies cited in the Index found output gains of 50 percent in marketing tasks, compared with 26 percent in software development and 14 to 15 percent in customer support. Marketing was the standout function for measurable AI-driven output gains among the categories the Index tracked.

Generative AI overall reached an estimated 53 percent population-level adoption within three years of its mass-market introduction, a faster climb than the personal computer or the internet saw in their early years. The report also found that U.S. consumer surplus attributable to generative AI reached approximately 172 billion dollars annually by early 2026, up 54 percent from about 112 billion dollars a year earlier.

The Index cautions that gains remain concentrated in structured, easily measured tasks, with adoption still uneven across company size and geography.
