Generative AI accounted for $127 billion of total enterprise AI spending in 2026, growing 59 percent year over year and ranking as the fastest-growing segment within enterprise IT. Enterprise generative AI spending had reached roughly $37 billion in 2025, more than triple the prior year, split about evenly between $19 billion on applications and $18 billion on infrastructure.

Adoption has accelerated to match. McKinsey found that 65 percent of organizations used generative AI in at least one business function in early 2026, double the share from ten months earlier, while broader measures put AI use of some kind at 91 percent of businesses.

The returns are uneven. Companies anticipate an average 171 percent ROI on agentic AI, and 192 percent in the United States, yet only 39 percent attribute any measurable operating-profit impact to AI. RAND reports that roughly 80 percent of enterprise AI projects fail to deliver business value, and an MIT study found that 95 percent of generative AI deployments produced no measurable profit-and-loss impact.

Speed to payback is improving where projects succeed. Median time to ROI fell from 24 months in 2024 to 14 months in 2026 as implementation patterns matured.
