Marketing and sales leads every business function in the share of organizations reporting revenue gains from AI, according to survey data charted in the 2025 Stanford AI Index. The chart draws on a McKinsey & Company survey conducted in 2024.
Of respondents whose organizations use AI in marketing and sales, 71 percent reported revenue increases. Supply chain and inventory management followed at 63 percent, service operations at 57 percent, product or service development at 56 percent and software engineering at 44 percent. In marketing and sales, 44 percent of respondents reported gains of 5 percent or less, 23 percent reported gains of 6 to 10 percent, and the remainder reported gains above 10 percent.
Cost results ran in a different pattern. Service operations led with 49 percent of respondents reporting cost decreases, followed by supply chain and inventory management at 43 percent and software engineering at 41 percent. Human resources and IT each stood at 37 percent, while marketing and sales and risk, legal and compliance each stood at 34 percent. Across functions, most reported cost savings below 10 percent.
The AI Index places the findings in a wider investment picture. U.S. private AI investment reached $109.1 billion in 2024, nearly 12 times the $9.3 billion invested in China. The report describes most companies as early in their AI journeys, with the most common revenue increase in marketing and sales falling below 5 percent.
