Organizational adoption of artificial intelligence reached 88 percent in the 2026 Stanford AI Index Report, up from 71 percent in the 2025 edition. The jump of 17 percentage points in a single reporting cycle is among the largest year over year moves the index has recorded for an enterprise technology.

Generative AI specifically appears in at least one business function at 70 percent of organizations. China and Europe posted the highest year over year increases in that measure, outpacing the growth rate recorded in North America.

Consumer uptake has moved faster than prior general purpose technologies. Generative AI reached 53 percent population adoption within three years of broad availability, a curve steeper than the personal computer or the internet at comparable points. Country level penetration varies widely. Singapore registered 61 percent and the United Arab Emirates 64 percent, while the United States ranked 24th at 28.3 percent.

The index estimates the value of generative AI tools to United States consumers at $172 billion annually as of early 2026. The median value captured per user tripled between the 2025 and 2026 reporting periods.

The 2026 report runs more than 400 pages and covers technical performance benchmarks, corporate investment, research output, hardware capacity, and public opinion alongside the adoption figures.
