Organizational use of artificial intelligence reached 78 percent in 2024, up from 55 percent in 2023, based on a McKinsey & Company survey charted in the 2025 Stanford AI Index. The line chart tracks the share of respondents who say their organization uses AI in at least one business function from 2017 to 2024.

The series shows 20 percent in 2017, 47 percent in 2018 and 58 percent in 2019. It moved to 50 percent in 2020, 56 percent in 2021 and 50 percent in 2022 before rising to 55 percent in 2023. The 2024 reading of 78 percent is the highest point on the chart.

Generative AI shows a steeper climb. Respondents reporting use of generative AI in at least one business function rose from 33 percent in 2023 to 71 percent in 2024, which is more than double.

Investment data in the same report points in the same direction. Global private investment in generative AI reached $33.9 billion in 2024, up 18.7 percent from 2023 and more than 8.5 times the 2022 level. Corporate AI investment overall reached $252.3 billion in 2024. U.S. private AI investment totaled $109.1 billion that year, about 12 times China's total of $9.3 billion.

The adoption series covers survey respondents across regions, and the Index reports that North America leads in organizational AI use.
