Visual Capitalist charted anonymized spending data from the Ramp platform to rank which AI model providers U.S. businesses pay for. The analysis covers paid subscriptions only, excludes free-tier usage, and draws on more than 50,000 U.S. businesses from January 2023 through March 2026.
OpenAI leads with 35.2 percent of U.S. businesses paying for its models as of March 2026. Anthropic follows at 30.6 percent. Google is at 4.3 percent and xAI at 1.9 percent.
The year-over-year change is large for the top two providers. Between January 2025 and March 2026, OpenAI moved from 16.8 percent to 35.2 percent, roughly doubling its share of paying businesses. Anthropic rose from 4.1 percent to 30.6 percent over the same 14 months, an increase of more than sevenfold.
Visual Capitalist links the Anthropic surge to the rollout of Claude Code and Cowork enterprise tools in late 2025. The chart tracks each provider's share of businesses with paid accounts over time, which shows the gap between the two leaders narrowing sharply across 2025 and early 2026.
Because the figures come from corporate spend records and count only paid plans, they measure purchasing behavior among Ramp customers. The dataset reflects U.S. business spending patterns from early 2023 to March 2026 and offers a market view separate from usage surveys.
