Enterprise adoption of artificial intelligence reached 88 percent in 2026, up from 71 percent a year earlier, according to Stanford's AI Index. The figure means 88 percent of organizations now use AI in at least one business function, while generative AI specifically is used by 70 percent of organizations.

The largest companies are furthest along. Stanford reports that 78 percent of Fortune 500 firms have deployed AI at scale, though the picture varies sharply by region. West Coast companies lead at 89 percent integrating AI solutions, while the Midwest trails at 62 percent.

Adoption, however, has outpaced execution. Fewer than 10 percent of organizations have fully scaled AI in any single business function, exposing a wide gap between using AI and running it in production. AI agent deployment remains especially limited, with adoption in the single digits across many business functions.

The value figures are climbing even as scaling lags. The median value per user tripled between 2025 and 2026, and Stanford estimates generative AI tools are delivering 172 billion dollars in annual consumer value to Americans as of early 2026. The pace of uptake stands out against past technologies, with generative AI reaching 53 percent population adoption in three years, faster than either the personal computer or the internet. The data describes a technology that has spread widely but has yet to be fully operationalized inside most organizations.
