Organizational adoption of artificial intelligence reached 88% in the 2026 Stanford AI Index Report, the annual field survey produced by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence.

Generative AI specifically now appears in at least one business function at 70% of organizations. The report records the largest year-over-year increases in China and Europe, narrowing a gap that favored North American firms in earlier editions.

Deployment depth tells a different story from headline adoption. AI agent deployment sat in the single digits across nearly every business function measured, showing that most organizations still run assistive tools rather than delegating complete workflows to autonomous systems.

Individual use varies sharply by country and tracks closely with GDP per capita, though several countries run well ahead of what income alone would predict. Singapore registered 61% and the United Arab Emirates 64%. The United States placed 24th at 28.3%, a ranking that sits behind its position in AI investment and model development.

The report also priced the consumer side of the technology. Estimated US consumer surplus from AI reached $172 billion annually by early 2026, up from $112 billion a year earlier, with the median value per user tripling across the same period.

Labor market figures drew attention as well. Employment for software developers ages 22 to 25 has fallen nearly 20% from its 2024 level, and one-third of employers surveyed expect workforce reductions over the coming year.
