Organizational adoption of artificial intelligence reached 88% in the 2026 Stanford AI Index report, up from 71% the prior year, meaning nearly nine in ten organizations now use AI in at least one business function.

Generative AI specifically is in use in at least one business function at about 70% of organizations. Stanford's Human Centered AI institute reports that China and Europe posted the largest year over year increases in adoption rate.

The gap between adoption and production deployment is the more consequential figure in the report. Fewer than 10% of organizations have fully scaled AI in any single business function. Nearly every organization is running AI somewhere, and very few have moved it from pilot status into an operationally embedded process.

At the population level, generative AI reached 53% adoption within three years of broad availability, a faster diffusion curve than either the personal computer or the internet achieved. Stanford notes the pace varies substantially by country and correlates strongly with GDP per capita, so the aggregate figure conceals wide regional dispersion.

Stanford publishes the AI Index annually through the Institute for Human Centered Artificial Intelligence, compiling data across technical performance benchmarks, economic indicators, research output, policy activity and responsible AI measures. The economy chapter tracks investment flows, labor market effects and corporate adoption separately.

The adoption and scaling figures together describe a market in an experimentation phase. Spending has moved broadly across organizations while the operational integration that produces measurable financial return remains concentrated in a small minority.
