Enterprise adoption of artificial intelligence has reached 88 percent among organizations surveyed for Stanford University's 2026 AI Index Report, according to the report's authors, marking one of the highest adoption figures recorded since the annual index began tracking business AI use. The report frames that figure alongside a broader pattern in how quickly generative AI has spread since its public debut in late 2022.

Globally, the report estimates that 53 percent of the world's population has used generative AI in some form within three years of its release, a pace the authors compare to the slower rollout of earlier general-purpose technologies. Personal computers took roughly six years to reach half the population, and commercial internet access took about seven years, making generative AI's climb notably faster by that measure.

Adoption varies considerably by country and by how usage is defined. The report notes Singapore at 61 percent and the United Arab Emirates at 54 percent, while the United States measured lower, at 28.3 percent, under a stricter methodology that counts only more consistent or regular use rather than any use at all.

Within marketing specifically, teams of 250 or more marketers reported 94 percent adoption of generative AI in recurring workflows as of the first quarter of 2026, with mid-market marketing teams close behind at 91 percent, suggesting the function has moved from experimentation toward routine use inside larger organizations.
