Stanford University's Human-Centered AI Institute released its 2026 AI Index Report, documenting a sharp acceleration in artificial intelligence investment and adoption across the United States. The annual report tracks technical progress, economic activity, and policy developments in AI worldwide, drawing on data collected through 2025.

The report found that private AI investment in the United States reached 285.9 billion dollars in 2025, more than 23 times the 12.4 billion dollars invested in China during the same period. The gap illustrates how heavily American venture capital and corporate funding continue to concentrate around AI development compared with other countries tracked in the index.

The United States also led the world in AI company formation, with 1,953 newly funded AI companies launched in 2025, more than 10 times the total in the next closest country. Globally, corporate AI investment reached 581.69 billion dollars for the year, a 129.9 percent increase over 2024 figures.

Despite that investment lead, the report found business adoption inside the United States trails several smaller economies. The country ranked 24th worldwide in AI adoption rate at 28.3 percent, a figure the researchers said reflects gaps between funding activity and day to day use inside American companies.

The index also estimated that AI delivered 172 billion dollars in annual consumer surplus to Americans by early 2026, up from 112 billion dollars a year earlier, as free and low cost AI tools expanded access to services once billed directly to consumers.
