The United States posted an AI Literacy score of 458.07 on the AI Skills Diffusion Index in 2025, the highest of any country in a chart in Stanford's 2026 AI Index report. The chart draws on LinkedIn data for 2025 and tracks two measures, AI Literacy and AI Engineering, by geographic area from 2016 to 2025.

The US AI Engineering score stood at 31.88 in 2025, far below its literacy figure. The gap points to a pattern in which broad familiarity with AI tools has climbed much faster than engineering-specific skills in the US data. The AI Literacy line for the United States begins later than the engineering line and rises steeply in the final years of the series.

Other large economies show a similar split. Germany recorded 153.20 for AI Literacy against 17.50 for AI Engineering. The United Kingdom registered 129.93 and 32.40, and Canada 142.97 and 39.05. France posted 91.73 and 19.29, while Brazil reached 167.31 for literacy and 51.22 for engineering.

A smaller group of economies leaned the other way. Chile recorded 99.84 for AI Engineering against 27.17 for AI Literacy, and South Africa 97.72 against 37.88. Argentina logged 96.74 and 48.42, and the United Arab Emirates 153.74 and 54.41.

The AI Index is compiled by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence. This chart appears in the 2026 report, which is available as a public PDF. The figures above are values labeled on the chart, with the US panel drawn on a larger vertical scale than most other countries.
