Enterprise spending on artificial intelligence is climbing sharply in 2026, yet the returns remain uneven across the companies making those investments. Gartner forecasts worldwide AI spending will approach 2.5 trillion dollars for the year, with narrower estimates placing spending on AI systems above 300 billion dollars and AI software alone near 157 billion dollars.

Adoption is now widespread. Roughly 72 percent of enterprises report at least one AI deployment running in production, and Gartner projects that 40 percent of enterprise applications will embed task specific AI agents by the end of 2026, up from less than 5 percent in 2025. Both Gartner and Forrester describe 2026 as a breakthrough year for multi agent systems, where specialized agents work together under central coordination.

The payoff picture is more mixed. Forrester finds that 44 percent of AI projects reaching production achieve positive return within 12 months, while other measures show only about 25 percent of AI initiatives delivering the returns expected of them and just 16 percent scaling across the enterprise. Gartner has cautioned that more than 40 percent of agentic AI projects could be canceled by the end of 2027.

Longer term projections stay large. McKinsey estimates AI agents could add between 2.6 and 4.4 trillion dollars in annual value across business use cases. Even so, only about 1 percent of enterprises describe themselves as having reached true AI maturity, a gap that frames much of the implementation work still ahead.
