Georgia Power says its grid is prepared for the surge in electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence and population growth, as the utility executes one of the largest capacity expansions in its history. The company's senior vice president of generation described AI as a growing technology that requires energy, and outlined the scale of the buildout underway across the state.
The utility is adding another 9,900 megawatts of generation capacity, along with 1,000 miles of new transmission lines and 4,000 batteries positioned across Georgia. The battery installations give the company flexibility to absorb sharp swings in load, a characteristic of AI data centers whose power draw can spike and dip with computing workloads.
Georgia has become one of the country's most active AI infrastructure markets, with hyperscale data center projects announced across metro Atlanta and beyond. Those facilities have transformed the state's load forecast: projections that once anticipated modest annual growth now show demand rising at a pace unseen since the postwar industrial expansion.
