A new analysis published by Search Engine Land on September 11, 2026 tracks how the length of search queries entering Google Ads has changed since AI Mode and chat assistants moved into mainstream use. The study compares impression and conversion data from January 2025 against August 2026 and follows an earlier look at the same data set a year ago.
Impression share for one and two word queries fell from 42 percent to 24 percent across the period, an 18 point absolute decline. The three and four word bucket rose from 33 percent to 48 percent of impressions and now holds the largest share of search volume in the sample.
Conversion data moved further. Queries of one or two words drove 62 percent of conversions at the start of the analysis and account for 52 percent today. The three and four word segment climbed from 20 percent to 46 percent. Five and six word queries tripled their conversion share from 3 percent to 9 percent, and queries of seven words or more went from 1 percent to 4 percent.
Conversion rates in the longer buckets rose each quarter while the shortest bucket declined, which points to higher purchase intent among users who supply more context. The author frames the pattern as consumers carrying conversational habits from AI assistants into Google, and argues that keyword bidding is giving ground to natural language targeting.
