Rising pressure to prove revenue impact and adopt artificial intelligence is pushing chief marketing officers to rebuild how their teams operate, according to a new playbook from Info-Tech Research Group published July 14, 2026. The report frames modern marketing leadership around four pillars: Strategy, Revenue, Execution, and Experience.
The playbook identifies six challenges shaping the CMO agenda, including increased revenue accountability, fragmented attribution, balancing short-term performance against long-term brand building, AI adoption, cross-functional alignment, and maintaining strategic focus amid operational demands. It describes a gap between the organizational pressure to adopt AI and the actual capacity to deploy it in a measurable, accountable way.
Data quality emerged as a central barrier. Only 11% of organizations described their marketing data as extremely high quality and accessible across systems, according to the report. A lack of integration between analytics and activation platforms was cited by 40% of small and midsize business teams and 34% of enterprise teams, and time-consuming manual data handoffs continued to slow execution.
The Execution pillar explicitly calls for AI, automation, data, and modern marketing technology to serve as the operational backbone of the function. Info-Tech positioned the framework as a response to converging forces: broad AI adoption, shifting buyer expectations, and mounting demands that marketing leaders demonstrate direct business results. The report advises CMOs to fix data foundations and system integration before expecting AI tools to deliver reliable returns.
