Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization have moved from buzzwords to budget line items in 2026, even as the underlying rules for winning citations in AI-generated answers remain unsettled, according to a detailed analysis from research firm EMARKETER. Nearly a third of the US population is expected to use generative AI search this year, pushing marketers to compete for visibility inside ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Perplexity rather than only in traditional search results.
Unlike conventional search, where a link either ranks or does not, AI engines synthesize answers from multiple sources into a single conversational response, and that response can change from one query to the next. Analysts told EMARKETER that between 40 and 60 percent of cited sources shift month to month across Google's AI Mode and ChatGPT, making visibility considerably less stable than traditional organic rankings. Reddit, LinkedIn, and YouTube ranked among the most frequently cited domains by major AI models in late 2025.
Traffic from AI platforms remains small in volume but converts at a notably higher rate. The Washington Post reported that visitors arriving from AI platforms converted to subscriptions at four to five times the rate of traditional search visitors. Major publishers, meanwhile, are seeing less than one percent of their referral traffic come from AI platforms despite frequent citations, underscoring a gap between visibility and clicks that analysts say marketers need new metrics to track.
Search marketing veterans interviewed for the report cautioned against overselling proven expertise in the field, noting that AI-specific optimization tactics overlap heavily with existing search engine optimization fundamentals rather than requiring an entirely new skill set. Recommended budget allocation frameworks favor core SEO investment first, with smaller shares directed to digital PR, measurement, and experimentation with AI-specific tactics.
