Boeing and American Airlines have completed the first landing gear exchange performed on a 737 MAX aircraft, extending a maintenance program Boeing has run for older single-aisle models to its newest generation of narrowbody jets. The milestone, announced September 15, 2026, shows Boeing can supply fully overhauled and certified main and nose landing gear assemblies that arrive ready for installation, a capability intended to shorten aircraft downtime and reduce the need for airlines to stockpile costly spare gear sets.
Under the exchange program, Boeing overhauls and certifies landing gear assemblies before shipping them out with the installation kits carriers need, though wheels, tires, and brakes are handled separately. For the American Airlines swap, the completed exchange walked through every stage of the process, from technical overhaul and documentation to final delivery, confirming the model can now be applied across the 737 MAX fleet.
Boeing says it is expanding its global overhaul capacity and coordinating with certified maintenance, repair, and overhaul partners to widen geographic coverage and cut lead times for customers. Near-term plans include growing the inventory of 737 MAX-compatible exchange assemblies, positioning forward-exchange capacity closer to where airlines operate, and tracking downtime and cost data as the program scales. Boeing has framed the expansion as a way to support airlines as the 737 MAX fleet approaches a period of heavier maintenance demand later in the decade.
