Boeing reported third-quarter revenue of $24.2 billion on October 27, driven by higher volumes in its defense and services businesses and a less favorable mix of commercial aircraft deliveries. The company posted a GAAP loss of $0.26 per share and a core loss of $0.34 per share. Operating cash flow was $1.5 billion and free cash flow was $500 million. Total company backlog reached a record $745 billion at the end of the quarter.
Boeing Global Services, the company's aftermarket and services unit, recorded revenue of $5.6 billion. Higher volumes lifted the segment, and its operating margin was 18.3 percent on favorable volume and mix. That margin was the highest of the company's three reporting segments in the quarter.
Commercial Airplanes revenue was $10.7 billion with an operating margin of minus 6.5 percent. Boeing attributed the result to the delivery mix, higher projected costs tied to future production rate adjustments and higher estimated supply chain costs. Defense, Space and Security revenue was $7.9 billion with an operating margin of 6.2 percent, which included a $252 million gain from the sale of HRL Laboratories and improved operational performance.
President and Chief Executive Kelly Ortberg pointed to recent milestones that include certification of the 737-7 and 737-10 and Boeing's selection to design and build the Navy's sixth-generation fighter aircraft. He said the company remains focused on safety and quality and on lean and disciplined execution to deliver on its commitments.
The results give a view of how aftermarket revenue and new aircraft production contributed differently to Boeing's earnings in the same quarter.
