Calhoun Community College in Decatur, Alabama, has launched a new FAA-certified Aviation Maintenance Technology program. The school cut the ribbon on its hangar facility for the program at Pryor Field Regional Airport on August 18. The two-year program will offer associate of applied science degrees in airframe and powerplant.
Aviation Week reported the launch in its rolling daily maintenance briefs alongside several other developments during the same week.
AAR opened an expansion of its Miami airframe maintenance facility, adding more than 100,000 square feet of space and a new hangar that will support three heavy maintenance lines. The company expects to induct the first aircraft into the hangar this fall.
Stratton Aviation announced that it has expanded its capabilities to include top and bottom case repairs on CFM International CFM56-5 and CFM56-7 engines.
LATAM Airlines reported that it has begun moving materials between its warehouse and maintenance workshops in Sao Carlos, Brazil, using drones. The carrier said transport time for small items such as screws, seals, gaskets, and connectors has dropped to 30 seconds from 15 minutes.
Brussels Airport is building a ground run-up enclosure that will allow aircraft engines to be tested at full power after maintenance. The airport said noise barriers will shield surrounding areas and the enclosure will accommodate larger aircraft including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. Construction is expected to finish by the end of March 2027.
Pryor Field Regional Airport is located between Decatur and Huntsville in north Alabama.
