Two projects to improve safety and efficiency are set to begin in July at Cobb County International Airport, the general aviation field northwest of Atlanta also known as McCollum Field. Cobb County commissioners approved a $3.7 million contract with Woodstock-based Astra Group Inc. to carry out the work, continuing a run of capital investment at one of Georgia's busiest general aviation airports.
The airport also gains a significant long-term federal tenant. Atlanta Northside Aviation Inc. is entering a 35-year sublease under which Hangar 240 will be used by the FAA's southeastern Flight Inspection Operations Group, known as Flightcheck. The group operates aircraft that verify the accuracy of navigation aids, instrument approaches and airport lighting systems across the Southeast, work that supports every instrument-rated runway in the region.
The FAA presence adds to an active maintenance and services ecosystem at the Cobb County field, where Hawthorne Global Aviation Services provides fixed-base operations and maintenance support for business and general aviation aircraft.
Metro Atlanta's aerospace sector carries an estimated $57.5 billion economic impact spanning advanced manufacturing, passenger transport, and maintenance, repair and overhaul. County-level investments like the McCollum projects keep general aviation capacity growing alongside the region's commercial hub at Hartsfield-Jackson.
