Boeing's latest Services Market Outlook forecasts a $4.9 trillion commercial aviation support and services market over the next 20 years, alongside demand for more than 2.4 million new aviation personnel across the same period.

Within that workforce figure, maintenance technicians account for 710,000 positions globally. The projection reflects both fleet growth and the replacement of retiring technicians, and it arrives while repair stations across North America and Europe report unfilled positions on existing shifts.

The demand outlook rests on traffic assumptions. Boeing expects commercial air traffic and fleet demand to roughly double over the 20-year horizon, which expands the installed base requiring scheduled maintenance, component overhaul, modification work, and training services.

Current conditions are adding to the near-term picture in a way the long-range forecast does not fully capture. Aircraft production backlogs have pushed airlines to operate existing fleets for longer than planned, which raises spending on reliability, availability, and maintainability programs for aircraft that would otherwise have been retired. Analysts tracking the near-term market project MRO activity reaching approximately $97 billion in 2026, up from $91 billion in 2025 on that measure.

Aging fleets, delivery delays, labor shortages, and supply chain volatility together are reshaping how operators budget maintenance. The combination shifts spending toward heavy checks, engine shop visits, and component repair rather than the lighter maintenance profile associated with newer aircraft.
