Boeing projects operators will need nearly 44,000 new commercial airplanes over the next 20 years, expanding the global fleet by close to 80 percent to more than 50,000 active aircraft. Passenger traffic is forecast to double across the same period.

Half of those deliveries replace previous generation aircraft with more fuel efficient models. The other half supports fleet growth, which means the maintenance base grows in two directions at once, adding aircraft while shifting the composition of what is already flying.

Single aisle narrowbodies absorb the bulk of the volume. That segment is projected to exceed 36,000 aircraft by 2045. Air cargo adds demand for more than 2,900 production and converted freighters over the forecast window.

The support and services market attached to that fleet carries a projected value of $4.9 trillion over 20 years, covering maintenance, parts, modifications, training, and digital services. A separate Boeing figure places the 2025 through 2044 services market at $4.7 trillion, with the difference reflecting the shifted forecast window.

Staffing is the constraint running underneath every one of those numbers. Boeing forecasts demand for more than 2.4 million new aviation personnel globally through 2045 across pilots, technicians, and cabin crew. Two thirds of that requirement replaces personnel leaving the workforce, and one third supports fleet expansion. Replacement demand of that magnitude means training capacity, rather than aircraft availability, sets the practical ceiling on operations.
