The Federal Aviation Administration announced a $26 million investment to develop the next generation of aviation pilots, aircraft mechanics, and maintenance technicians, with applications opening in May 2026. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy announced the funding on May 18, 2026, as part of a broader effort to address workforce demand in the aerospace industry.
The investment is distributed across two grant programs. The Aircraft Pilots Workforce Development Grants support efforts to recruit and educate students pursuing careers as pilots or drone operators. The Aviation Maintenance Technical Workers Workforce Development Grants fund initiatives focused on recruiting and training future mechanics and maintenance technicians.
Eligible applicants include aviation schools, aviation-related nonprofit organizations, air carriers, labor groups, and state, local, territorial, and tribal governments. Applications must be submitted by June 18, 2026.
The announcement comes as the aviation industry faces projected shortfalls in both pilots and certified maintenance personnel over the next decade. Workforce projections from Boeing and the International Air Transport Association have consistently identified maintenance technician gaps as a long-term labor constraint for airline operations globally, with US-based shortfalls expected to grow as experienced technicians retire.
The FAA investment targets the training pipeline, funding institutions that prepare students for Federal Aviation Regulations Part 147 certification programs and other credentialing pathways for maintenance careers.
