Huntsville International Airport in North Alabama has ceremonially launched Phase I of its West Aviation development, a project intended to expand the airport's aerospace and maintenance capacity. The initial phase will develop land west of Runway 18R/36L to include dedicated hangar space, a direct-access taxiway ramp, and infrastructure built to support aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul companies alongside defense and advanced manufacturing tenants.
The project received a $2 million federal allocation through the Fiscal Year 2026 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, secured with the backing of Congressman Dale Strong. Airport officials said the funding will help prepare the site for future MRO and aerospace tenants rather than fund a single specific facility at this stage.
Plans for the development also include relocating County Line Road to accommodate the expected industrial growth. Airport leadership has described the long-term vision for West Aviation as mirroring Huntsville International's existing cargo complex on the airport's East Runway, which has grown into a significant logistics hub in its own right.
The expansion reflects North Alabama's continued growth as an aerospace and defense corridor, building on the region's existing base of maintenance, engineering, and advanced manufacturing employers.
