SkyWest Airlines plans to establish an aircraft maintenance facility at Salina Regional Airport in Kansas to support its fleet of more than 500 regional jets. The new maintenance base is expected to be operational by early spring, expanding the carrier's in-house capacity to perform scheduled checks and line maintenance on the regional aircraft it operates for major United States network airlines.

The investment reflects continued pressure across the domestic maintenance, repair, and overhaul sector, where demand for skilled technicians and hangar capacity has outpaced supply. Carriers operating large regional fleets have increasingly chosen to build dedicated maintenance bases rather than rely solely on third-party shops, giving them tighter control over aircraft availability and turnaround times. Salina's central location and existing aviation infrastructure make it a practical site for servicing aircraft spread across SkyWest's route network.

The announcement fits a wider pattern of consolidation and expansion in United States aviation maintenance. VSE Corporation recently agreed to acquire Precision Aviation Group in a transaction valued near $2 billion, broadening its MRO, distribution, and supply chain footprint across commercial, defense, rotorcraft, and general aviation markets. New maintenance bases and large acquisitions point to operators positioning for sustained fleet activity and a persistent shortage of maintenance labor.
