West Star Aviation has received a Supplemental Type Certificate from the FAA authorizing installation of the Honeywell CD-830 flat panel display, extending the maintenance provider avionics modernization work into a large slice of the legacy business aviation fleet.
The certificate, designated ST00818DE, is an Approved Model List STC. That structure allows West Star to install the CD-830 on more than 40 aircraft models built by five manufacturers under a single approval, rather than requiring a separate certification effort for each type.
Many business aircraft still fly with Honeywell cathode ray tube control display units. Manufacturing of CRT display technology has halted, components have grown hard to source, and the units weigh more, draw more electrical power and deliver lower long term reliability than current hardware. Those conditions have made repair of the older displays progressively harder for maintenance shops to sustain.
The CD-830 uses flat panel LCD technology, removes obsolete CRT hardware from the flight deck, lowers aircraft weight and reduces electrical power draw. West Star describes the swap as a plug and play replacement that avoids major panel modification and extensive rewiring, which limits the downtime an operator absorbs during installation and shortens the hangar slot required to complete the work.
The approval fits a broader pattern across the United States maintenance sector, where operators keep aircraft in service longer than original planning assumed and shops respond by building certified upgrade paths for aging systems. Avionics obsolescence has become a recurring driver of shop visits, with parts support timelines and display technology among the most common triggers for a modernization decision.
