Amazon is exploring a shift from private power generation to grid-connected electricity supply at an 8,000-acre AI campus it is developing in Pecos County, Texas. The company told Data Center Knowledge it is actively examining a transition to front-of-the-meter grid service, which could eventually let its onsite generation add supply for other customers.

The project, known as GW Ranch, combines a planned natural gas power complex with an AI data center. Developer Pacifico Energy has described plans for up to 7.65 gigawatts of gas generation, 1.8 gigawatts of battery storage and as much as 750 megawatts of solar at the site, with first power targeted for the first quarter of 2027 and more than 5 gigawatts online by 2031. A preliminary state environmental determination describes a 5,000 megawatt gas plant built around 35 turbines that would supply the data center directly rather than sell power through the local utility.

Amazon has not disclosed the campus size, its planned investment or whether it has filed a large load interconnection request with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas. The company said it is exploring solar and battery storage on the site and that its initial phase will not need water for power generation cooling, with later phases relying on brackish groundwater that does not compete with drinking water supplies.

A University of Texas researcher who studies electricity markets noted that few companies have successfully executed behind the meter generation projects at this scale, and that the turbines needed for such projects remain in short supply industrywide. Amazon's arrangement highlights how large technology companies are increasingly building private power systems to speed data center construction while grid connections remain constrained.
