Texas has 140 data centers under construction, the most of any US state, with Virginia close behind at 136, according to Aterio figures mapped by Visual Capitalist as of March 2026.

Those two states are the only ones with more than 100 projects underway, and the drop after them is steep. Georgia ranks third with 56 sites under construction, followed by Ohio at 51, Arizona at 35 and Nevada at 29. The concentration is just as sharp at the other end of the table. Twelve states have no data centers under construction at all, and another 11 have fewer than five.

The Southeast appears well beyond Georgia. Mississippi has 21 projects underway, eighth nationally. North Carolina and South Carolina each have 12, Alabama has 8 and Tennessee has 3. Louisiana counts 11.

The Virginia total is anchored in the Northern Virginia corridor known as Data Center Alley, where dense fiber routes and an established cloud presence have drawn Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft.

Spending behind the buildout is large. Big Tech is expected to put 700 billion dollars into AI data centers this year.

The same conditions that attract developers are creating friction. Electricity demand in fast growing markets is testing grid capacity, and water use for cooling has become a local issue in rural Georgia, where residents have raised concerns about noise, light and well levels. Several states and municipalities are weighing tighter environmental reviews or temporary pauses on new projects.
