Globalinx is moving ahead with a third phase of growth at its cable landing station and data center campus in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Local reporting from Virginia Business and the Virginian Pilot indicates the Virginia Beach Development Authority agreed this month to sell nine acres inside the Corporate Landing Business Park to the company for $1.8 million. The parcel is intended to carry the next stage of the campus, an 85,000 square foot building rated at roughly 25MW. Globalinx values the project at about $65 million. The facility is planned to house additional cable landing stations along with carrier neutral colocation and interconnection space. The company has not released a construction or delivery schedule.

The campus dates to a 2016 announcement. Construction on the first phase began around 2018 and that building entered service in 2019. A second phase expansion is already in progress on the same site.

The purchase arrives at a complicated moment for data center growth in the city. Virginia Beach officials are weighing a one year moratorium on new data center development, and the city council is scheduled to vote on a resolution that would pause new permitting. Globalinx also has separate plans for a backup data center in Portsmouth, roughly 20 miles west of the Virginia Beach campus. Virginia Beach has drawn subsea cable operators for years because several transatlantic routes come ashore there, which gives colocation space on the campus direct access to international fiber capacity.
