Goldman Sachs projects that US data center power demand will more than double to 66 gigawatts in 2027, up from 31 gigawatts in 2025, driven by an accelerating buildout of AI computing infrastructure across the country. The firm's analysis shows demand climbing from 31 gigawatts in 2025 to 41 gigawatts in 2026 before the sharper jump the following year.

Total US data center capacity is expected to grow to roughly 95 gigawatts by the end of 2027, more than doubling the level recorded at the end of 2025, based on an assumed capacity utilization rate of 70%. Data centers' share of total US peak summer electricity demand is projected to rise from 4.1% in 2025 to 8.5% by 2027, a shift that utilities and grid operators are factoring into long-range planning.

The report identifies the Mid-Atlantic, Mid-Continent, and Northwest regions as facing elevated grid reliability risk from the buildout, while it characterizes the impact in Texas and Georgia as comparatively manageable given existing plans for additional power generation capacity in both states. Goldman Sachs also notes that only 50% to 60% of data center capacity scheduled for the next one to two years is likely to come online on time because of construction and interconnection delays.
