Google has signed an agreement with Georgia Power to support power uprates at two nuclear plants owned by the Southern Co. subsidiary, Data Center Dynamics reported on September 22, 2026. Reports put the added generation capacity at 96 MW for the Georgia grid.
The two plants are Plant Vogtle, a 4.5 to 4.8 GW facility in Burke County near Waynesboro, and Plant Hatch, a 1.84 GW site near Baxley. Georgia Power owns both sites, and Southern Nuclear, a sister company owned by Southern Co., manages operations.
The Georgia Public Service Commission must approve the uprates before the work can be completed. Georgia Power filed for approval earlier in the week, asking the commission to approve a new nuclear uprate tariff structure and an extended power uprate for Units 1 and 2 at Hatch. An extended uprate for Units 1 and 2 at Vogtle was approved last year as part of Georgia Power's 2025 Integrated Resource Plan.
Under the agreement, Google will take part through a subscription-based program under the new tariff and will receive low-carbon credits tied to the carbon-free attributes of the added capacity. Georgia Power said the uprates will come from modifying plant equipment such as turbines, pumps, motors and cooling systems, allowing the reactors to run at higher licensed thermal power levels and produce more electricity.
Aaron Mitchell, senior vice president of strategic growth at Georgia Power, tied the program to the utility's Customer Protection Pledge. Lucia Tian, director of advanced energy technologies at Google, described expanding existing reactor capacity as a way to bring new nuclear power online.
The deal adds to Google's nuclear portfolio, which includes a power purchase agreement for the 615 MW Duane Arnold Energy Center in Iowa and a 50 MW agreement with Kairos Power.
