Iron Mountain has begun construction on a new data center campus east of Richmond, Virginia, expanding the company's footprint in one of the Southeast's fastest-growing digital infrastructure markets. The 66-acre site sits in White Oak Technology Park in Henrico County, a corridor that already hosts facilities operated by Meta and QTS. At full build-out, the campus is expected to span more than 1 million square feet and offer over 200 megawatts of capacity.
The first phase, known as RCH-1, will total 360,000 square feet with 48 megawatts of capacity once complete. Iron Mountain plans to bring 18 megawatts online by 2027, with the remaining 30 megawatts following as the facility reaches full capacity around 2030. The company acquired the land for the project in November 2024 and started site work this year.
Richmond's data center market remains smaller than Northern Virginia's, the largest concentration of data centers in the world, but it has drawn growing interest from operators seeking available power and land closer to the coast. Iron Mountain already operates a larger campus in Manassas, in Northern Virginia, where five data centers are active across 142 acres, with four more planned to bring that site to a targeted 280 megawatts.
The Richmond project adds to a broader expansion for Iron Mountain, whose data center division reported $620 million in revenue for fiscal year 2024, up 25 percent from the prior year, as the company has also moved into markets in India and the Middle East.
