Meta is expanding its data center campus in Eagle Mountain, Utah, marking the fourth expansion phase since the facility began operating in 2021. The social media and technology company announced plans for new buildings using closed-loop liquid cooling systems with dry coolers, a design that limits water use during normal operations.
The expansion raises Meta's total investment in the Eagle Mountain campus to more than $3 billion. Company officials said construction will support more than 1,200 workers at peak activity, with the completed facility adding more than 300 permanent jobs once operational.
Located outside Salt Lake City, the campus broke ground in 2018 with an initial $750 million, 1 million square foot development. Meta added a 500,000 square foot expansion in 2019, a 900,000 square foot expansion in 2021, and two additional buildings totaling 2 million square feet in 2022. The latest expansion continues that pattern of incremental growth at the site.
Meta operates more than 30 self-built data center campuses worldwide and continues to add capacity as it pursues large-scale artificial intelligence infrastructure. The company remains one of the largest lessors of third-party data center and cloud capacity in addition to its own development program.
Full technical specifications for the new Eagle Mountain buildings have not been released. Local officials in Eagle Mountain have highlighted community investment tied to the project, including funding directed toward area schools and educational programs.
