Constellation Energy has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google that supports 890 MW of new nuclear capacity in the PJM Interconnection region, according to Utility Dive. The investment is valued at $4.3 billion.
The Google agreement follows a 20-year power purchase agreement Constellation signed with Amazon during the past week. Together the two deals support almost 1.1 GW of nuclear expansion. Constellation described the Google arrangement as a direct response to PJM's Bring Your Own Power proposal.
PJM is short about 6.8 GW of new capacity as data center demand rises. The grid operator plans to delay a reliability backstop procurement auction after the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission partly approved the design on Sept. 29.
The agreement spans six nuclear sites. Constellation and Google said it is expected to help sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and create about 7,200 temporary construction jobs. It also includes operational load-shaping and demand-response capabilities designed to reduce power consumption when the grid is under stress.
Constellation Chairman, President and CEO Joe Dominguez said in a statement that preserving and expanding the output of the existing nuclear fleet and developing new generation is critical to meeting the nation's growing energy needs.
The companies also expanded a five-year technology agreement. Constellation will build Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows into its core operations, and the two firms will apply AI to site selection, power flow modeling, permitting and interconnection planning, generation optimization and infrastructure security.
Constellation shares rose almost 14% in morning trading after the announcement.
The deal pairs commercial investment in nuclear uprates at existing plants with Google technology, which the companies said supports the rapid growth of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.
