A record 86 gigawatts of utility scale generating capacity is projected for addition to the US grid in 2026, surpassing the 53 gigawatts added in 2025 and marking the largest single year increase since 2002, according to Energy Information Administration projections.

The composition is concentrated in three technologies. Solar accounts for 51% of the total at 43.4 gigawatts, battery storage for 28% at 24.3 gigawatts and wind for 14% at 11.8 gigawatts. Those three categories together represent 93% of planned additions.

Nuclear capacity remains essentially flat across most EIA modeling cases. Generation rises meaningfully only in the Low Oil and Gas Supply case, where natural gas prices climb enough to make new nuclear construction economical during the 2040s.

Policy targets sit well above the modeled trajectory. The White House has stated a goal of 400 gigawatts of installed nuclear capacity by 2050, against a current fleet near 98 gigawatts, and has indicated support for an additional 5 gigawatts of new plants and uprated capacity by 2030.

The gap between the near term policy target and the current fleet illustrates the timeline problem. Uprates at existing plants can deliver incremental capacity within a few years. New construction, including small modular designs, requires licensing, supply chain development and construction periods that place completion well beyond 2030 for projects not already underway.

Data center load growth is the demand assumption driving the overall capacity buildout in EIA's 2026 outlook.
