A newly published country by country ranking of nuclear electricity generation shows the United States remains the world's largest producer of nuclear power, ahead of China and France. Nuclear energy supplies roughly 18 percent of total US electricity generation, a share that has held steady even as overall power demand climbs on the back of data center and AI driven growth.

Among other major producers, France generated 381 terawatt-hours of nuclear electricity in the latest annual comparison, a 12.2 percent increase from the prior year and the largest total in Europe. Russia followed at 216 terawatt-hours, essentially flat year over year. In Asia, South Korea produced 189 terawatt-hours, up 4.3 percent, while Japan generated 85 terawatt-hours, up 9.3 percent as more of its idled reactor fleet returns to service. Smaller European producers Finland and Belgium generated 33 and 31 terawatt-hours respectively.

The rankings reflect a broader global trend of rising nuclear output as utilities restart shuttered reactors and pursue new construction to meet growing electricity demand. In the United States, that demand is increasingly tied to data centers supporting artificial intelligence workloads, prompting major technology companies to sign long term power purchase agreements directly with nuclear plant operators. Utilities across the Southeast and elsewhere are weighing similar investments as they plan grid capacity for the years ahead.
