Rising power demand from data centers and AI is pulling major technology companies into long-term nuclear commitments, reshaping the market for firm generation. The clearest example is Meta's plan to procure up to 6.6 gigawatts of nuclear energy in the PJM market from three partners, Vistra, TerraPower, and Oklo, a volume large enough to power millions of homes.
The strategic logic is straightforward. Data centers require steady, high-volume electricity around the clock, and nuclear offers carbon-free baseload output that matches that profile better than intermittent sources. As hyperscale operators race to secure power for AI workloads, they are increasingly willing to sign multi-year agreements that give developers the revenue certainty needed to advance projects.
The timeline remains a constraint. Commercial nuclear entered 2026 with strong momentum, but analysts caution it will be years before new capacity comes online and possibly a decade or more before a significant number of new gigawatts reach the grid. That gap means near-term deals often focus on existing plants, restarts, and advanced reactors still working through development.
The commitments matter beyond the individual contracts. Corporate demand is providing a new source of financing and offtake that the nuclear sector has long lacked, helping justify investment in both the current fleet and next-generation designs.
The data points to a market where AI-driven electricity demand is becoming one of the strongest forces behind renewed nuclear investment, even as the physical buildout lags the pace of the announcements.
