The United States operates 94 nuclear reactors and remains the world's largest producer of nuclear electricity, according to industry statistics compiled by the Nuclear Energy Institute. The fleet is notable for its efficiency, running at a capacity factor of 92 percent, a figure that reflects strong management of both planned and unplanned outages.
Nuclear power supplied about 19 percent of US electricity generation in the most recent full year of data, making it the largest source of always-on, carbon-free electricity on the grid. That share has held steady even as the total number of reactors has changed little, a result of high capacity factors and periodic power uprates that squeeze more output from existing units.
The capacity factor figure stands out against other generation sources. Because nuclear plants run near their maximum output around the clock, they produce far more electricity per unit of installed capacity than intermittent sources, which helps explain how a fleet of 94 reactors delivers close to a fifth of national generation.
The United States holds the most nuclear capacity of any country, ahead of France, China, Russia, and South Korea, based on international data. Domestically, the fleet's reliability has drawn renewed attention as utilities and large power buyers seek firm, continuous electricity to meet demand from data centers and broader electrification.
The statistics underscore why policymakers have focused on extending and expanding the existing fleet as a foundation for future capacity growth.
