The U.S. nuclear pipeline is filling out. Industry members have 23.4 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity planned over the next 15 years, a figure that reflects both large reactors and a growing slate of advanced and small modular designs. The buildout accompanies a federal target of 400 gigawatts of nuclear capacity by 2050, with 10 large reactors slated to be under construction by 2030.
Near-term additions come from bringing idled plants back. The Palisades reactor in Michigan received approval to restart, Constellation's Crane Clean Energy Center is set for 2027, and Duane Arnold is targeted for 2029. Restarting a shuttered plant can add gigawatt-scale carbon-free capacity faster than building new, provided the units pass regulatory review.
Life extension is the other lever. Utilities are pursuing license renewals at 20 plants and power uprates at 29 units, adding capacity and years to the existing fleet without new construction. Uprates in particular deliver incremental megawatts from equipment already in place.
Together, restarts, renewals, uprates, and new builds mark a shift from a fleet that was slowly contracting to one positioned for measured growth.
